Seafarers onboard often face mental health-related challenges, like isolation, loneliness, lack of shore leave, fear of criminalization, fear of job loss and separation from family, which could affect their mental health. We all have similar influences that impact our state of mental health and we should ideally express our thoughts and feelings to others without shame or prejudice. To the same extent, we should be available to act accordingly when we identify someone in a low psychological state, provide our valuable help and stay connected.
SQLearn has developed a library of e-learning modules available under the Let’s Talk Training Programme, as part of its Dolphin Platforms services. The aim of the modules is to help the crew to start having conversations around mental health and to start building understanding.
Let’s Talk Training Programme for maritime is a concept that becomes more and more common and can prove to be of high importance to seafarers’ state of mental health and, since an aftereffect, also to their safety onboard. Through real case scenarios, discussion topics and do’s and don’ts provided, the crew understands that by staying connected to each other and to other communicational channels available for their mental wellbeing, they can confront issues that may arise before creating a negative effect on their psychology.
